A Nun, a Rabbi, and Hope Valley

Rabbi Haviva Ner-David wrote this novel while studying at One Spirit in both the Seminary and Interspiritual Counseling programs, consulting with Sister Monica about the Catholic elements of the book. Come hear them discuss Hope Valley and a vision for a shared society of people of all three Abrahamic faiths in the Holy Land.

Hope Valley is the story of two women, one Jewish-Israeli and one Palestinian-Israeli, who come together to form the unlikeliest of friendships. Tikvah, a second-generation Holocaust survivor, and Rabia (Ruby), a second-generation Nakba survivor, meet one summer day right before the outbreak of the 2nd intifada, in the Galilean valley that separates the segregated villages in which they live. As their relationship develops, the women begin to open up to each other's narratives and humanity as they uncover secrets about their lives—past and present; and, in recognizing each other’s pain, they offer us hope that fear and resentment can grow into love.

Haviva Ner-David is a writer and rabbi. In 2006 she became the first woman to publicly receive Orthodox rabbinic ordination, only to leave Orthodoxy and call herself a post-denominational rabbi. Ten years later, she received interfaith from the One Spirit and now goes by post-denominational inter-spiritual rabbi. She went on to study in the One Spirit's Interspiritual Counseling program and trained in dreamwork with Rev. Judith Schafman.

Haviva's rabbinic specialties are spiritual companionship, water immersion rituals, wedding and marriage preparation, coming of age ceremonies, and other ritual and ceremony creation and innovation. Founding rabbi of Shmaya: A Mikveh for Mind, Body, and Soul on Kibbutz Hannaton in the Lower Galilee, she uses her spiritual companionship and ministry skills in her mikveh work, officiating and helping clients create personalized immersion ritual ceremonies. She also facilitates group mikveh workshops. As a spiritual companion, she works with individuals and couples, including rabbinical and ministry students, and specializes in dreamwork, inner child work, and nature soul work, as well as general sacred listening.

Haviva writes both fiction and non-fiction and is the author of three spiritual journey memoirs, a novel, short stories, essays, a blog on Times of Israel, scholarly articles, and a guidebook for engaged couples. Hope Valley is her debut novel.
