Praying for the World through a Metaphysical Lens

- Praying from the News headlines.

This is our opportunity to come together and leave all that needs fixing, all that’s troubling, outside the door of our Upper Room. We are going to remove our shoes, our mortal opinions, and come into a space that is pure, singular…and pray together to see as God sees, to know what God knows, to hear the still small voice of Spirit …just as we need to hear it.

I first started this practice in the mid-1980s when I attended a satellite conference from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, headquartered in Boston, MA. I heard a passage from a letter written by Mary Baker Eddy to her church in the late 1800s, that asked me “to live for all mankind”. I heard this charge as my call to answer the world’s cries for help, by praying via the headlines in the news. Over these last three decades, this practice of praying for the world through a metaphysical lens has helped me be a more courageous witness, a more authentic comforter, a more aware spiritual citizen. I offer this practice to you, to add to your spiritual tool kit.

In our time together, I’ll briefly ( remembering Blessed are the brief!) share some concepts on praying from this perspective, an overview of what it is, why it’s needful, where and when it can be done. Then we will devote time to praying together. I will serve as a guide in prayers for the world and also provide time for individual prayerful work. Afterward, we’ll meet in small break-out groups to discuss and unpack the experience and then finish the hour with some whole group time to ask questions or share insights.

Rev. Martha Doran, PhD

Rev. Martha Doran, PhD, is an ordained interspiritual minister, graduating from One Spirit Learning Alliance Seminary in June 2017. Becoming a college professor in the early 1990s, she honed her skills of being a guide on the side, letting go of the urge to be a sage on the stage. She feels everyone is both a teacher and a student; that everyone has a story to tell, a unique gift to contribute; and that education is a way to lead forth this inner splendor. Martha was raised in the Christian Science religion and remains deeply grounded in her early teachings of an ever present Presence that is exclusively good, inclusive of all. Yet she was called beyond a specific religion to a “place she knew not where”. Some years later, Spirit called her to apply to OSLA and what a treasure that has proven to be.  Again listening to Spirit, Martha felt called to walk the Camino de Santiago in May 2019. She is still unpacking all of that Camino. Martha delights in the journey and feels her ministry is a daily walk to witness and hold all who come to her thought, all who are on her path in Truth, in compassion, in Love. She currently lives in Ventura, CA with her best friend and husband Gary, their dog Millie and the kitten sisters, Abby and Sam. One amazing pack!
