There are approximately 2 million people in the nation's prisons and jails—a 500% increase over the last 40 years. Some of the most vulnerable members of our communities are incarcerated, among them youth and transgender persons. According to the ACLU, on any given day there are nearly 60,000 youth under the age of 18 who are incarcerated in juvenile jails and prisons within the United States. Of all youth nationwide, transgender persons represent 7-9% yet are overrepresented at 20% of all youth in juvenile justice facilities. Prisons can be dangerous places especially for youth and transgender people who are traumatized by violence and many types of abuse. In addition to our young people housed (or incarcerated) within the justice system, there are over 2 million children who suffer emotionally, socially, and economically as a result of parental incarceration.
Join One Spirit in Action for Part III of our panel discussion series, “Re-MEMBERing OUR Forgotten Community.” We will uplift the voices and lives of youth and transgender persons who have been impacted by incarceration, both directly and indirectly, as well as hear from those who serve them and the challenges they face. We look forward to your participation in this important conversation as we bring attention, awareness, and activism to the harm and injury of the justice system to them, their families, and their communities as OUR OWN.
