Equanimity: there in the middleness

Facilitated by Rev. Susan Nason, Rev. Molly Hansen, and Rev. Lynn Manuell.

“Sit like a mountain. Sit with a sense of strength and dignity. Be steadfast, be majestic, be natural and at ease in awareness. No matter how many winds are blowing, no matter how many clouds are swirling, no matter how many lions are prowling, be intimate with everything and sit like a mountain.”

- Sharon Salzberg

Using multimedia Rev. Molly and Rev. Susan will present the concept of equanimity. Found as a spiritual practice in many religions, we will explore its meaning, how to cultivate it as a spiritual practice, how has it already shown up in your life, and what current situation in your life will benefit from allowing you to face it with equanimity.

We’ll offer an interactive exercise, as well as a guided meditation which can be used as part of one’s spiritual practice of equanimity. There will be recorded music at various points during the gathering and a guest performer singing a song live.

“If you have too many days of feeling off-balance, stressed or disturbed, you may seek the inner calm and stability that comes from equanimity. Equanimity is not a special quality reserved only for the favored few, but a skill that can be developed by anyone.”

- Meg Slater, Mindfulness Coach, Author.

Facilitators

Rev. Susan Nason

Reverend Susan Nason, “The Parent Whisperer NY,” brings her passion and wisdom to her work with parents and teachers, teaching compassionate and effective communication skills to ensure a life-long bond with children. She has been a public speaker and workshop facilitator for over 45 years, and a recent meditation leader. During these many months of living in the age of Covid, she has attended zoom talks, joined in Sangha, participated in and led meditation groups, where the topic of equanimity has been discussed, stirring her curiosity on what is equanimity and how can one practice it. She is excited to be a co-presenter for The Gathering on equanimity as she explores this topic.

Rev. Molly Hansen

Reverend Molly Hansen was ordained through One Spirit Interfaith-Interspiritual Seminary (2018) and earned certification as a Spiritual Companion in Care in December 2020. Molly volunteers in a variety of roles with One Spirit and, since January 2020, she has been serving as meditation leader for the Thursday morning sangha. Back home in Chicago, Molly serves The Spiritual Gathering as a board member, regular speaker, meditation leader and Prayer Chaplain. Trained in the wisdom and spiritual practices of many of the world’s faith traditions, Reverend Molly has taken the opportunity for a deeper spiritual dive during the pandemic and has found the practice of equanimity to be particularly enlightening and helpful during the immense challenges of the last two years. Molly often turns to Thich Nhat Hanh, Pema Chodron and Padraig O’Tuama for guidance when the going gets rough. Molly is looking forward to exploring equanimity further as a co-presenter for The Gathering on February 10.
