Experience the joy of contemplative photography as a spiritual practice.
Using photography, participants will practice mindful seeing through creative exercises, designed to develop an eye for recognizing the holy in the ordinary. Activities include weekly themed contemplative photography assignments, guided mindfulness meditations, Visio Divina (meditating with imagery), and sharing the dynamics of in-class and at-home practice experiences—including the invitations to spiritual growth that follow seeing in a new way.
Amateur photographers and visual learners will practice with cameras or smartphones. No prior experience necessary. Emphasis will be on seeing with "the eyes of the heart," rather than photographic skills building.
After taking this course, participants should be able to:
Understand the language and methods of contemplative photography, as well as some of the unique qualities and challenges of this intimate art form
Appreciate what is holy, healing, and transformative about this method of deep connection and make informed choices about how to incorporate this practice into their spiritual lives
Continue a personal practice of "Visio Divina" (sacred seeing) meditation, using their own or others' imagery
