Uniting Heaven and Earth
The Radical Wisdom of the I Ching
Life rarely moves in a straight line. We lose our way, return to familiar patterns, and sometimes find ourselves facing the same questions again and again.
For thousands of years, people have turned to the I Ching, or Book of Changes, to better understand the forces shaping their lives. Rooted in ancient Chinese wisdom, the Oracle offers a way to recognize patterns, examine our choices, and reconnect with what truly matters.
Rather than predicting what comes next, the I Ching invites us to consider where we stand, what may need to change, and how we can live with greater purpose and integrity.
When we rise, all rise.
In this fourth workshop of One Spirit Learning Alliance's Sacred Texts Series: Navigating Crisis, Rev. Stewart Griffin introduces the I Ching as a practical spiritual discipline for self-discovery, healing, and ethical living.
Across four Wednesday evenings, participants will learn how to consult the Oracle, interpret its wisdom, and use divination as a practice of reflection and realignment. Through conversation, guided exercises, and shared inquiry, we'll explore how personal growth can strengthen our relationships, communities, and connection to the world around us.

What We'll Study
March 3 - The Oracle: Understanding the I Ching and Learning to Consult It
Explore the history of the I Ching and its relationship to Taoist and Confucian thought. We'll examine the hexagrams, yin and yang, and the patterns of change that form the foundation of the Oracle. Participants will learn how to perform a reading and begin interpreting its wisdom as a guide to understanding their present circumstances.
March 10 - Approaching Heaven: Self-Knowledge, Inner Worth, and the Courage to Grow
Explore the Confucian ideal of the junzi, or noble soul, and the lifelong practice of cultivating character and self-understanding. Through reflection and discussion, we'll consider how to recognize what nourishes us, release what no longer serves us, and dedicate ourselves to the people, relationships, and work that bring meaning to our lives. We'll also practice refining our questions, moving beyond what we want to happen toward understanding who we are and how we wish to live.
March 17 - Uniting Heaven and Earth: Living Our Values in a Changing World
Explore te, the cultivation and expression of virtue, and how the I Ching can help us bring our actions into alignment with our deepest values. We'll examine the importance of timing, discernment, and learning from obstacles. Together, we'll consider how to remain grounded in our principles, even when they challenge the expectations of our families, communities, or society. This session moves from personal understanding toward our place in the wider world and the responsibilities that come with it.
March 24 - When We Heal, All Heal: Divination as a Practice of Healing and Connection
What if consulting the Oracle were less about predicting the future and more about recognizing when we've lost our way?
In our final gathering, we'll explore divination as a practice of healing and realignment, considering how greater self-awareness can support the well-being of others. Through shared inquiry and the possibility of group divination, we'll consider how our questions can expand beyond individual concerns to include our communities and the world we share.

What to Expect
This is a participatory workshop rather than a traditional lecture course. Each gathering will begin with a short presentation introducing the evening's themes, followed by opportunities for individual reflection, small-group conversation, and shared exploration.
Participants will practice consulting the I Ching, interpreting readings, and developing more meaningful questions. There will also be opportunities to discuss readings between sessions.
Stewart will draw on his own poetic interpretation of the I Ching, developed through three decades of study and daily practice. Participants will also receive an individual consultation with Stewart, offering additional guidance in interpreting and working with the Oracle.
